Ethics Society

The University of Miami Ethics Society has a decade-long track record in stimulating discussion and debate into the ethical implications of our academic, professional and social environments.

The organization endeavors to spread understanding of ethics and critical thinking throughout society – in law, medicine, politics, business, information technology and other fields. It delves into these issues through special programs and presentations, panel discussions and collaborations with other groups.

The Ethics Debate unit of the Ethics Society allows students to augment their studies of the discipline through discussion and argument in a competitive setting. In addition to training members for two University-wide competitions during the year, Ethics Debate also fields teams for the Southeast Regional and National Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl.

Hyperion Council

The Hyperion Council is an undergraduate student organization that focuses on developing projects to strengthen bonds between the local business and university communities. Each year, the council initiates projects that link the university to at-risk communities and promotes important business concepts including market economics, entrepreneurship, personal and financial success, and business ethics to better themselves, their communities and their countries.

The Council’s projects have included the UM Jamaica Project, which provided business and development training to women running small businesses in Jamaica. In 2009, the council will also begin assisting the American Red Cross to develop a new marketing initiative in an effort to improve its brand among 18 to 25 year olds.

The School of Business houses a chapter of SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise), an international organization that brings together a diverse network of university students, academic professionals and industry leaders who share the vision of creating a better, more sustainable world through the positive power of business. By contributing their talents to projects that improve the lives of people, SIFE participants demonstrate that individuals with a knowledge and passion for business can be a powerful force for change. The School’s chapter of SIFE works with its Hyperion Council on a number of initiatives, such as the Jamaica Project.
