South Florida Business Journal – May 3, 2013 – The newspaper published an article about the School’s Entrepreneurship Consulting Program in which entrepreneurship majors spend a semester consulting for small businesses. The article quoted Dean Gene Anderson who noted that students need to get “out into the real world to give them a clinical experience – almost like medicine.” 

School of Business Student Vying for $1 Million in Hult Prize Global Online Competition – Public Invited to Vote, April 30, 2013
A team of UM student entrepreneurs including a School of Business senior is among 76 teams vying for $1 million in start-up funding to launch their social ventures as part of the Clinton Global Initiative.

New ventures including a boat shoe seller, a health care provider and a social entrepreneurship program built around a café have taken top honors in the University of Miami’s 2013 Business Plan Competition, which featured $30,000 in prizes.

The Miami Herald – August 13, 2012 – An article profiled Jason Shuman, who started a business that provides customizable boat shoes for fraternity members who want their Greek letters on their shoes. The article noted that idea started at UM “during Shuman’s sophomore year, when he took an introduction to entrepreneurship class.” Article

The Miami Herald – August 6, 2012 – Susan Amat, a management and marketing lecturer at the School, authored an article offering advice to entrepreneurs who brainstorm business ideas and go into business with friends. "While it is easy to pull in a friend to partner on your dream, make sure that person has the skills and shares the vision to execute on your idea," she wrote. Article

The Miami Herald – July 30, 2012 – An article about the struggles of a small restaurant in Miami included insight from Ken Colwell, director of the School’s entrepreneurship programs, who noted that only a small percentage of new restaurants survive, especially in Miami where costs and competition are high. “Frankly, the odds are stacked against these guys,” he said. Article

Forbes – May 9, 2012 – One of the magazine's entrepreneurship blogs published an article authored by School of Business alumnus Lucas Sommer, who wrote about how winning a $25,000 Pitch It contest helped him launch Audimated.com, an online music business, several years after he graduated in 2007. Article

The Miami Herald – April 27, 2012 – An article in the paper’s “Starting Gate” blog noted that junior Tyler McIntyre won the Technology Student Entrepreneur award in the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce’s annual Technology Leaders of the Year Awards. The article also noted that The Launch Pad at the University of Miami won the Technology Organization award. Article

White House Recognizes School Lecturer and Alumna as an Entrepreneurial Mentor and “Champion of Change”, 03/07/2012
The White House will honor Susan Amat, a management and marketing lecturer at the School, as one of eleven “Champions of Change” for outstanding leadership in entrepreneurial mentoring, counseling and training.

Student CEO Wins National Entrepreneurship Award, 02/16/2012
School of Business entrepreneurship major Ketan Rahangdale, who has been working with The Launch Pad at UM to develop state-of-the-art wireless headsets, received the Kairos 50 (K50) award from the Kairos Society for promote innovation, clean energy and technology.

The Miami Herald – Dec. 12, 2011 – An article provided information about a visit to the White House by Susan Amat, a management and marketing lecturer at the School, and four other Florida entrepreneurs, who were in Washington as part of the Startup America program announced by President Obama in June. MBA and Undergraduate Students Shine in Elevator Pitch Contest, 11/18/2011
Two students from the School of Business – an MBA and an undergraduate – took top honors in this year’s Elevator Pitch Contest, hosted by The Launch Pad and presented by The Miami Herald during Global Entrepreneurship Week Nov. 14 – 20. The contest, open to both students and the South Florida community, provided local entrepreneurs the opportunity to share in more than $100,000 in prizes to support and grow their businesses.

School’s Undergraduates Take Top Honors in Regional Entrepreneurship Competition, 10/21/2011
The School of Business was well represented among the finalists in the South Florida chapter of the Entrepreneur’s Organization Global Student Entrepreneur Awards (GSEA) program, held this month at the School. The program recognizes outstanding undergraduate students who run their own businesses while attending college. Four of the six program finalists, including the grand prize winner, are all members of the School’s entrepreneurship program.

MBA Student Wins Statewide Business Plan Competition, 10/06/2011
One of the School’s MBA students has won the first annual statewide collegiate business plan competition at the annual Early Stage Venture Capital Conference. Mark Slaughter, CEO of Collaborative Bioscience, beat out six other finalists from other universities throughout the state of Florida.

The School of Business is expanding its global reach as it helps support entrepreneurship in Africa. Ken Colwell, director of the School’s entrepreneurship programs, was among leading business professors and entrepreneurs who traveled to Nigeria in July as part of the Nigerian Youth Entrepreneurs Program (YEP).

Alumnus Among those Honored with Ernst & Young’s 2011 Entrepreneur Of The Year® Award, 06/13/2011
An alumnus of the School of Business Administration is among this year’s recipients of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year Florida Award. Jose Mas (BBA ’92, MBA ’94), CEO of MasTec, was among 12 entrepreneurs who were named as award winners at a gala event in Orlando on Thursday, June 16.

School Hosts Young Entrepreneurs for BizPlan Challenge and Earns Educational Partner of the Year Award, 05/18/2011
The School of Business welcomed some of South Florida’s top young entrepreneurs May 18 for the 4th Annual Youth Bizplan Challenge, organized by NFTE South Florida. The five students participating in the contest had to present business plans for new ventures before a panel of judges including the director of the School’s entrepreneurship programs.

Entrepreneur’s $1.5 Million Gift Will Establish Triple-Degree Program at UM’s School of Law with MBA Delivered by School of Business, 04/11/2011
A $1.5 million gift to the University’s School of Law will create what is believed to be a first-of-its-kind program in which students who were undergraduate business majors can earn three degrees—a JD, an LLM in taxation, and an MBA—in just four years.

Student Entrepreneurs Take Home $42,000 in Annual Business Plan Competition Hosted by the School of Business, 04/01/2011
The students behind a bacteria killing spray and a clothing company took the top prizes in the annual University of Miami Business Plan Competition, sponsored by the School of Business Administration. The winners were announced April 1, shortly after the undergraduate and graduate students competed in the final round of the contest, which is now in its ninth year.

McIntyre, who majors in entrepreneurship, marketing and finance, last year won an elevator pitch contest sponsored by The Launch Pad at UM, then went on to launch Lucid Messenger, a messaging application for the Blackberry, iPhone and Android mobile devices.
